OptiMums - Postnatal Wellness at Strive Clinic

OptiMums is an exciting new postnatal wellness programme which launched in Strive Clinic, Level 2, Briarhill Shopping Centre in January 2018. The next group of OptiMums are now being enrolled!

At Strive, we believe that as a mother, your physical and mental wellbeing are inextricably linked and cannot be separated. We realise that there is much new territory to navigate and adjust to with the arrival of a new baby. The OptiMums programme will focus on the health of both mind and body, in a relaxed, comfortable and yet stimulating environment.

It is open to all mothers who have had a baby in the last year, whether it is your first baby or not.  OptiMums is an 8-week programme in total and will be a combination of one-to-one consultations as well as some group work.

A Few Words from Previous OptiMUMS!

To have a professional, physical assessment of my recovery has been beneficial as the experience of having a baby takes its toll on your body. This combined with tailored therapeutic exercises prescribed by a Physio means that I am on the right track with my recovery. Acknowledging the mental challenges that come with motherhood and being aware of the change in my role means I’m looking after myself and being kind to myself. This programme provides a nice balance of physical and mental health care postnatally.

A brilliant well put together programme. Helped me to feel comfortable introducing gentle exercises to my post labour body while giving me tools and strategies to keep my mind happy and healthy too.

Overview of Programme

To start, you will have two one-to-one consultations with each of a Pelvic Physiotherapist as well as a Compassion Focused Therapist. The Physiotherapist will assess your pelvic floor and abdominal wall strength and will set some physical goals with you. The Compassion Focused Therapist will introduce the compassionate mind approach, and how cultivating self-compassion is relevant and essential as you transition into motherhood.

Following these initial visits, if appropriate, you will then attend six small group sessions which will gently combine Pilates-based postnatal exercise with compassionate mind techniques. A one-to-one consultation again on week 8 will help to evaluate your OptiMums journey and reassess your goals.

1 to 1 Visits

Pelvic Physiotherapy

Pregnancy, as well as the process of giving birth, will have a significant impact on our bodies. New mothers commonly report:

  • Not being able to sit down comfortably
  • Leaking urine with sudden movements
  • Having difficulty with bowel control
  • Weak or separated abdominal muscles
  • A feeling of ‘something coming down’ underneath
  • Ongoing back / pelvic pain
  • Sex feeling like a distant prospect!
  • All this in addition to the exhaustion

Our pelvic physiotherapist will spend about 45 minutes with you to establish your unique physical priorities and goals. She will check your abdominal wall and your pelvic floor muscles to make sure you are exercising safely and correctly. We will then have a baseline for you to progress from in the group sessions.

Compassion Focused Therapy

Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) draws from scientific understanding and evidence based approaches to help cultivate mental and emotional wellbeing. Research has demonstrated that developing compassion for ourselves and others can help us to navigate the ups, downs and challenges that are all too common in life.

As busy new mums there is much to adjust to with the arrival of your baby and the new uncharted dimension this brings to your world. We need self-compassion more than ever at this time.

OptiMums will introduce mums to the concept of self-compassion. The sessions will gently look at how we are shaped by evolution in ways that we do not realise and how we can learn to understand ourselves and our needs better. Using the skills of mindfulness and attention training we will gently practice the cultivation of compassion and learn ways to bring this compassion to ourselves to help cope with daily challenges of busy lives.

Group Sessions

The group sessions will be a fun, enjoyable, gentle yet stimulating environment. Physiotherapy and Compassion Focused Therapy will be combined to facilitate improvements in both physical and emotional wellbeing.
